The Formation of Rotary Blyth

As Rotary clubs grew, a group of Blyth men met to discuss the formation of such a club in our town. They were Mr Nigel Parry, Headmaster of Blyth Grammar School, (later to become the Reverend Parry) Mr John Turner, Town Clerk and Mr John Yarwood, Solicitor. Encouraged by our "Mother Clubs" Newcastle and Whitley Bay an inaugural meeting was held in June 1924. In September an Application for Membership was agreed and sent to RIBI in December. This was approved by the board in January 1925 and the date of our inauguration was back dated to our application date which is 15th December 1924.

Structure of Rotary Blyth

The club is led by the President who is elected annually.

The election would normally follow a service as Junior Vice President, Senior Vice President to gain experience and assist the current President.

Also elected annually are the Secretary, Assistant Secretary and the Treasurer.

Club Council

The business of the Club is guided by the Council. 12 members are elected annually, 6 of whom are voted on in December. They are the Directors. The Immediate Past President is automatically on, and 6 members voted on in April are board members.

They normally meet monthly, usually on the second Wednesday of the month.

The president will ask each Councillor to take the responsibility as chairman for the various sub-committees.

• Centenary: Dealing with the Centennial celebrations
• International: All major events throughout the World
• Foundation: Rotary's own charity e.g. "End Polio Now" and ambassadorial scholars
• Youth Services: Contacts with schools, Rotary Youth Leaders (RYLA)
• Membership: Public Relations

Is the motto adopted by Rotary international which signifies the belief that Rotarians would put their duty to help others before their own needs.

THE FOUR WAY TEST

In 1932 Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor created the Four-Way Test.

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships.

The test has been translated into more than 100 languages and Rotarians recite it at club meetings.

The test asks the following questions : of the things we say and do.

FIRST:  Is it the TRUTH?

SECOND:  Is it FAIR to all concerned?

THIRD: Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

FOURTH:  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

 ROTARY BLYTH INVOLVEMENT IN LOCAL MATTERS 

We are proud of our commitment to our local community. In many ways it is impossible to list them all in a short article. We have long been associated with Blyth Valley Disabled Forum and the Phoenix Theater. We support many individuals and Youth Oganisations and Clubs and offer social support to Food Banks, Young Carers and support for abused families. Our Christmas Hampers provision is always well received. We are constantly monitoring activities in the area and present a "Citizen of the Year Award" annually. We have established good relations with local schools and present awards for activities such as Young Writer, Young Artist and most recently one of our schools won a National Competition as Junior Environmentalists. Each year schools are asked to nominate a pupil to receive a "Rotary Junior Citizen of the Year Award" so that worthy young people can receive the recognition they deserve.
